Jazzing the classics" is as old as jazz itself, I guess. It was extremely popular in the 1920s. Paul Whiteman and his orchestra performed a large number of jazz/dance arrangements of classical music. An early example would be Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song of India", arranged by Ferde Grofé, recorded by Whiteman in 1921.
